A Pup called Pip: Pip's first family holiday :)

???? Took Pip for his first family holiday last weekend.

?? The house at Skene?s Creek ? a tiny town near Apollo Bay ? was advertised as ?pet friendly?. Included in our contract was this lovely list...

DOGGIE DO?S & DON?TS

  • All dog droppings must be removed from premises prior to departure.
  • Your dog must not under any circumstances be taken inside the premises.
  • ?A fee of $50 is charged and payable when the balance of your accommodation monies is paid.
  • The owner of the dog is liable for any damage caused to the premises or resulting loss suffered by the property owner.
  • It is the occupiers responsibility to ensure their dog is suitably restrained within the rear yard of the premises.
  • A barking or aggressive dog will not be tolerated under any circumstances and may result in the termination of your booking.
  • If there is found to be any infringement relating to any of the above, Great Ocean Road Real Estate has the right to request immediate vacation of the premises without refund.

??

???? Nice eh?

? ??

??? So with much trepidation ? my credit card being the one in question, we ventured off for said weekend. The first night went okay ? Pip wasn?t overly happy with not being allowed inside but thankfully he still sleeps outside ? I couldn?t be bothered going through the night toilet-training. We put his bed up against the lounge room window where he could see us, cuddled up snugly by the fire, while he froze mournfully outside. So far so good. But the next day the Groove Queen, her hubby and child and Douglas arrived.

??? Now Douglas is accustomed to having run of the house. He sleeps inside thank you very much. And he was very unimpressed with the house rules.

? ? He proceeded to bark most of the night, even though GQ and Him-In-Doors took the dogs for a midnight walk!

?? Apparently the two dogs barked most of the night. Thankfully I was oblivious to this until about 5am when I woke up to hear them barking fairly incessantly. They seemed to be setting each other off. After some time, all went suddenly quiet and I surmised, correctly, that those rampant rule breakers had let Douglas inside!

?? But the peace was priceless! ??

Why does Norway's Breivik invoke the Knights Templar? (+video)

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a twin terror attack in Norway last July, claims to be a member of a reborn 'Knights Templar.' What's the symbolism?

One of the highlights of today's testimony in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of the murder of 77 people during a bombing and shooting rampage in Norway, was the prosecutor's efforts to challenge Mr. Breivik's purported membership in the "Knights Templar."

Skip to next paragraph A sociologist for the defense talks about Andrew Breivik's world view.

Breivik claims to have helped "refound" the ancient military order as a force to fight immigration and multiculturalism in Europe. But why turn to a long-gone Christian order to symbolize his agenda today?

The Knights Templar, or "Templars," were a Christian order founded in the 10th century. Named for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Templars initially protected pilgrims traveling through the Holy Lands, but eventually evolved into a powerful military force that waged war against the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Templars became so powerful, however, that European leaders grew to distrust the order. Early in the 1300s, King Philip IV of France launched a crackdown on the Templars that, with the help of Pope Clement V, eventually spread Europe-wide, destroying the order. Many members were tortured and tried for heresy by the Catholic Church.

But despite, or perhaps because of, their ancient history and sudden demise, the Templars still hold a solid grip on modern imaginations and pop culture. They are frequently depicted as the mysterious controllers of the world in books like Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" and movies like "National Treasure." "The Da Vinci Code" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" set the Templars up as secret keepers of the Holy Grail. They even appear as the enemies in video games like "Assassin's Creed."

Certainly, the organization that Breivik claims to be a member of is equally mysterious. Breivik describes the organization as "a leaderless network, made to be self-driven cells.? He said that ?For militants, [Knights Templar] is meant to be a version of Al Qaeda." He has yet to name another member of the group, claiming that to do so would risk their being caught, though he has indicated that his "English mentor" can be found in London and that a Serb "war hero" living in Liberia is among the group's ranks.

Whether or not the Templars in which Breivik claims membership are real, the name is likely meant to evoke both the mysterious nature of the original Templars and their open war against Muslim forces during the Crusades. The historical Templars' modern reputation and supposed influence makes a strong symbolic counterpoint to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda.

Monitor guest blogger James Bosworth suggested that the use of the name may also be meant to legitimize the group as a moral one.

Last July, Mr. Bosworth noted that Breivik was not the first violent criminal to invoke the Templars: A Mexican criminal gang has also adopted the name and some of the associated symbolism. But Bosworth concludes that "The Mexican Knights Templar code of conduct appears to be a false appeal to Mexico's citizens," something that could also be argued of Breivik's use of the Templar mythology. "The Knights Templar label is a failed attempt to grant historical legitimacy to a violent act that truly has no justification," Bosworth wrote.

Frugal Friday at Afternoon Delight Cafe - cup of chili or berry dessert ...

afternoondelightberrypatch.JPG

Mary Bilyeu |?Contributor

I don't often go out to lunch on a weekday. So it was a great luxury to meet my friend Nancy recently at Afternoon Delight, when I took a few hours off for an abbreviated "girls' day out" to eat and then meander through a second-hand store hoping that something might call to us (but unfortunately hearing not even a whisper). ?Good food and friendship all in one afternoon!

Today's Frugal Floozie Friday feature is one I've meant to go back to for some time, and it was Nancy's first visit to the cafe... so many places to eat, so little time. ?Afternoon Delight is an Ann Arbor institution, serving great breakfasts and lunches, with an emphasis on fresh, healthy dishes and generous portions.

For a mere $3.25 ? well within our mandatory budget of $5 per person or less ? I ordered a cup of excellent beef chili. (A bowl of the daily house-made soup offerings would have cost $4.25, still a good deal.) I was offered a slice of bread or crackers to go with this, and the latter simply struck my fancy at that time for crumbling over the top. The chili was thick and slightly spicy, a perfect antidote to the blustery weather outside that day.

I also ordered The Berry Patch, pictured above, which is frozen yogurt topped with an abundance of perfect, fresh fruits. ?It costs only $4.50, and is a very large serving. I was given a choice of vanilla or raspberry yogurts or ? best of all ? a swirl of both which, needless to say, I picked. This was so rich and creamy, with gorgeous, sweet berries! ?It was a great dessert, but would also make a wonderful breakfast or snack.

Nancy chose the small salad bar ? one trip ? which just barely exceeded our Frugal Floozie Friday budget at $5.49. This gives you a choice of an abundance of beautiful greens, vegetables, dressings and prepared salads.

As we went through the cafeteria-style line to order and pay for our food, we noted the enormous brownies ($2.75) and muffins ($2.50). ?There are other desserts, too ? such as pies, cookies, and sundaes ? ranging in price from $1.95-$4.25. ?

A assortment of coffee drinks is available for less than $3 each, and many breakfast options are offered from $1.50-4.95. Afternoon Delight also serves a wide variety of sandwiches, which can be split to stay within the $5 budget per person.

Whether you're looking for a hearty breakfast, a light lunch or a quick snack, Afternoon Delight has something to tempt you... and for not very much money!

Samsung launches new services for the Galaxy S III: Music Hub, S Health and more

Image

Samsung has just taken the wraps off of its highly anticipated Galaxy S III and, in a move similar to Nokia's efforts with the Lumia line, decided to package extra services and features to further differentiate itself from the competition. Mentioned onstage were the S Health "personal wellness app" and a Music Hub cloud service with access to over 17 million tracks and a "Scan and Match" feature. Music Hub will launch in seven countries, while the matching feature is supported in six of those. There's also a hub for Games that promises quick tie ins to social gaming and a Video Hub with TV and movies. One other new feature is support for MirrorLink enabled headunits that should bring access to all of these things even while you're driving your car. Finally, there's an NFC-based mobile payment option that should get some use among visitors to the Olympic games this summer.
